Two new specialists will focus on advancing healthcare system policy and legislation for the firm’s growing client base
Washington, DC – April 11, 2019 – Waxman Strategies today announced two new hires, Maggie Jo Buchanan and Kashif Syed, growing the firm’s capacity to focus on advancing transformative health policy. Together, these two specialists joining the health policy team represent a continued commitment by the firm to delivering an unmatched blend of policy expertise, on-the-ground experience and deep-rooted passion for continual improvement in public health outcomes.

Maggie Jo Buchanan joins the firm as a Senior Director, having worked at both the state and federal levels to advance progressive health policy that improves the health and well-being of families across the country. Prior to joining Waxman Strategies, Maggie led major policy initiatives at organizations that include the Center for American Progress, Young Invincibles, and NARAL-Pro Choice America. She also served as a Senior Legislative Assistant handling all health care matters in the office of Congressman Lloyd Doggett. Maggie has provided commentary in leading national and regional media outlets that include NPR, Vox, and the Houston Chronicle, and her work has appeared in numerous academic publications. Maggie received her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Kashif Syed has been named a Director in the Waxman Strategies health practice, bringing his years of notable health policy analysis and advocacy experience to the firm. Previously, Kashif was a senior member of the policy team at Planned Parenthood Federation of America working on a variety of health equity and public health issues including family planning, HIV and STD prevention, immigrant health issues and more. Kashif was an awardee of the prestigious “If/When/How” fellowship, a policy-focused fellowship designed to create entry points into the reproductive health, rights, and justice fields. He spent his fellowship year at Advocates For Youth in Washington, D.C., advocating for young people’s access to health care and comprehensive sex education. He received his B.A. from Michigan State University and holds a J.D. from the Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Maggie and Kashif join a robust health policy team led by veteran DC decisionmakers including former Congressman Henry Waxman, former Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Bill Corr, former Senior Advisor in the Office of Health Reform at HHS Kristi Martin, and former FDA Deputy Commissioner for Policy Jeremy Sharp.
