Waxman Strategies Adds Senior Staffers to Expand Health, Technology and Environmental Practices

Washington, DC – December 12, 2018 – Waxman Strategies today announced the addition of senior communications professionals as the firm continues to expand its technology, healthcare and environmental practices. Catherine Oakar, Nick Horowitz and Alex Armstrong join the firm, bringing a unique blend of policy expertise, communications strategy and campaign experience to deliver results for clients working to create sustainable change in the public interest.

Catherine (Cat) Oakar joins Waxman Strategies as a Senior Advisor, enhancing the firm’s existing roster of health policy experts. She previously served as Associate Director of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative in the Office of the First Lady at the White House. She also worked for the Obama White House as a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of National AIDS Policy and spent four years at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ultimately serving as the Director of Public Health Policy in the Office of Health Reform. She began her work in Washington, D.C. as a David A. Winston Health Policy Fellow. Cat will bring her insights and experience to Waxman Strategies’ roster of health tech, healthcare, and public health clients.

Nick Horowitz will serve as a Senior Director in the firm’s growing technology practice and brings more than a decade of strategic communications and public affairs expertise to Waxman Strategies. Having worked with a broad portfolio of global technology brands and startups, trade associations, and non-profit groups, he has managed and executed global public relations campaigns for innovators in a variety of sectors and is passionate about working in spaces where emerging technology solutions align with social and political causes. Horowitz has worked in Washington, D.C. since 2007, serving previously in communications roles at the Podesta Group and Racepoint Global.

Alex Armstrong joins as a Senior Director, leading communications for the firm’s environmental clients. Armstrong comes to Waxman from Oceana, the world’s largest international ocean conservation organization, where he managed international communications efforts, reputational and events media, and executive communications. He previously worked at SKDKnickerbocker in Washington, D.C. where he developed and facilitated public affairs and strategic campaigns for corporate, nonprofit, and advocacy clients. With a background in state and local politics, Armstrong has held communications and strategy roles for numerous political campaigns in Connecticut. In his new role at Waxman Strategies, Armstrong will utilize his expansive knowledge of environmental communications strategy to guide media relations and visibility campaigns for the firm’s groundbreaking domestic and international work.
