Henry Waxman Helps Broker Landmark Forest Agreement

On February 22, Mighty Earth, Waxman’s campaign collaboration with the Center for International Policy, announced its agreement with Olam, “the World’s Largest Farmer,” to protect forests, great ape habitat and local communities in Africa and Asia. Among other things, the agreement ushered in broader transparency and a stricter no-deforestation policy in Olam’s rubber and palm oil operations. Chairman Henry Waxman proved integral in the negotiations spurred by Mighty and Gabonese partner Brainforest’s revealing report, Palm Oil’s Black Box.

It’s an agreement that Mighty CEO Glenn Hurowitz believes could transcend Olam’s operations into the palm and rubber industries as a whole. “Olam’s commitment to deforestation-free rubber in its own plantations is one of the first examples of a corporate commitment to environmental and social responsibility in the rubber industry,” he wrote in a blog post on Mighty Earth’s website. “We anticipate greatly increased calls for the rubber industry to align themselves with deforestation-free policies in the palm oil, paper, and soy industries.”
