Vice President – Environment Technology and Policy Communications

Waxman Strategies, a mission-driven policy and communications consulting firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, is accepting applications for a Vice President of Environment Technology and Policy Communications. We’re looking to fill this key leadership role in our Technology Practice with a candidate who brings experience in management, communications, business development, and a strong commitment to the power of technology to help solve the climate crisis. 

 

Who we are: 

Waxman Strategies provides strategic communications, public affairs/PR, advocacy, and policy counsel to organizations working primarily in the areas of technology, health, and the environment. Our Technology Practice serves a range of clients advancing public interest solutions, including innovators and startups, investors, accelerators/incubators and associations, foundations, and non-profit organizations. Here you will be part of a growing team of communications professionals working collaboratively to accelerate technology solutions for some of the world’s biggest challenges: electric vehicles charging infrastructure; electric grid resilience; emerging renewable/clean energy technologies; advancing zero waste goals for smart cities; tech solutions for carbon drawdown; ocean health and more.

 

The position:

As the VP of Environment Tech and Policy Communications, you will develop partnerships with potential clients in a range of climate tech sectors, manage a portfolio of clients including growing startups and nonprofits, build effective communications plans, guide the development of compelling content, generate media attention, deepen relationships with reporters, and ensure we respond nimbly to breaking news on climate tech issues. 

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  •     In coordination with our Managing Director and other senior leadership, providing strategic direction, subject matter expertise and thought leadership to our Tech Practice’s goals and objectives.
  •     Active management of and participation with client accounts to ensure their success, which involves developing and implementing integrated communications strategies, plans and campaigns calibrated to achieve short- and longer-term objectives and impact.
  •     Managing and training at least one member of the Tech Practice staff; recruiting and hiring additional staff as needed.
  •     Cultivating strong relationships with media, industry players, analysts and other influencers; actively pitching stories and generating coverage.
  •     Writing and editing a variety of communications materials, both internal and external, including press releases, reporter pitches, blog posts, fact sheets, talking points and contributed content such as op-eds, bylines and blog posts.
  •     Managing meetings and conference calls with our clients; planning and facilitating larger meetings such as convenings or roundtables.
  •     Building a comprehensive knowledge of client business and competition; keeping on top of client industry topics, issues, and sectors; monitoring and reacting to breaking news and trends. 
  •     Actively identifying potential new clients, with special focus on the Climate Tech space, including proposal creation and presenting at new business meetings and pitches.
  •     Working closely with clients to develop effective messaging for targeted audiences, securing speaking engagements and identifying and securing opportunities to enhance clients’ position in the market.
  •     Managing thought leadership programs, including crafting substantive, holistic narratives that break through the news cycle, and developing the necessary and appropriate materials to support and drive a range of communications campaigns for clients.

 

Who you are:

Required qualifications:

  •     You have a minimum of ten years of professional work experience, including a significant   background in communications and media relations. Experience in relevant climate technology sectors is a huge plus, particularly where communications has led to industry or policy impact on climate goals.
  •     Ambition to take on innovative campaigns, capitalize on media opportunities, drive communications program activity, and evaluate campaign results against objectives.
  •     You have significant experience with business development and enjoy nurturing industry relationships and building new client partnerships.
  •     You have experience recruiting, managing, and mentoring staff.
  •     You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, which includes such tasks as effectively drafting talking points and press materials and jumping on the phone to pitch a reporter or a new client. 
  •     You have a commitment to and experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including marginalized communities such as communities of color, low-income communities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, various religious backgrounds, and more.
  •     A commitment to incorporating DEIJ values into the work we do for clients and how we grow the firm, supporting professional development for colleagues across the firm, and coaching and mentoring junior staff.
  •     You have flexibility, can take initiative, and a willingness to learn as issues arise.
  •     You have excellent project management and organizational skills.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  •     Experience in managing communications campaigns for companies in cleantech is a plus. 
  •     Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Details: We have a preference for candidates based in the Washington, D.C. area, but will consider candidates in other U.S. locations. During the pandemic, our D.C. based staff have the option of working from home but also have access to the office. The safety of our team is a top priority and we will resume working from our office, travel, and in-person meetings when it is safe to do so. You will report to and partner closely with the Managing Director of our Technology Practice. This is a full-time position.

Compensation and benefits: The salary range for this position is $126K to $160K, depending on experience. We have a generous benefits package, including group health insurance, dental benefits, unlimited vacation time, paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan. Interview process: Our interview process involves a phone interview, two video interviews, a writing exercise, and reference calls for candidates advancing in our process. We have adjusted our interview process to phone and video interviews during the COVID pandemic.
