Special Assistant – Health Practice

Waxman Strategies, a mission-driven consulting firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, is accepting applications for a Special Assistant in our Health Practice. We’re looking for talented candidates to provide administrative and logistical support to our practice leadership, including scheduling, managing a clearance process for materials, and other critical assistance for our work. As the Special Assistant in our Health Practice, you will help ensure our team has the tools and systems needed to achieve our goals to: lower prescription drug prices; address the rising cost of health care; protect and expand access to care for vulnerable populations including low income communities and communities of color; work for strong public health policies; and more.

Background on the position:

As the Special Assistant in our Health Practice, you will work with our health team and former Congressman Waxman, to shape and influence policy around health issues, one of the most pressing and high-profile issues in our country. The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for operations and administrative work, strong communication skills, and excellent problem solving and project management abilities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing scheduling for practice leadership, including organizing and scheduling meetings and phone calls with diligent attention to appointments and multiple calendars;
  • Managing the prep for meetings, including booking conference rooms and equipment, communicating with participants, and preparing agendas and materials;
  • Participating in client meetings and conference calls, taking notes and synthesizing key takeaways;
  • Preparing and compiling professional correspondence, presentations, and reports as needed;
  • Facilitating and planning events for the Health Practice and our clients;
  • Tracking and organizing Health Practice’s billing receipts;
  • Coordinating health team travel as needed;
  • Conducting background research for policy issues or business development;
  • Anticipating needs for the team and proactively suggesting solutions. Performing other administrative duties as necessary to achieve the goals of the practice and firm.

Who you are:

  • You have at least 1 year of relevant professional work experience, including a background in administrative work;
  • You are detail-oriented and have strong organizational skills, with an eye for accuracy;
  • You have a passion for health issues and mission-based work;
  • You have excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills;
  • You can exercise discretion and handle confidential information;
  • You can work under pressure on competing responsibilities with resilience, discretion, and diplomacy;
  • You can work on projects independently as well as working well as part of a team;
  • You have a commitment to and experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including marginalized communities such as communities of color, low-income communities, members of the LGBTQ community, various religious backgrounds, and more.
  • You are adept with technology, especially Advanced Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You can get up to speed with new technologies quickly.
  • Legislative, political, or advocacy experience is a plus. Experience on health issues also a bonus.
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Details: This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. You will report to the Senior Vice President of our Health Practice and work with the rest of the health team.
