Grants and Operations Associate

Waxman Strategies, a progressive public affairs firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, is accepting applications for a Grants and Operations Associate. We’re looking for a talented and highly-organized individual to support our Environment Practice’s operational strengthening, grant management, and fundraising. You will play a crucial role in ensuring our environmental campaigns and programs are both adequately funded and operationally sound so that our firm can achieve maximum impact.

Who We Are

Deemed “one of the most accomplished legislators of his or any era” by President Barack Obama, former Congressman Henry Waxman leads our all-star team. We use advocacy, communications and campaigns to shape policies, advance causes and build movements around the world. A sampling of clients includes the Arcus Foundation, the National Wildlife Federation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Rainforest Foundation Norway, the National Association of Community Health Centers, Planned Parenthood, and the National Resources Defense Council. Much of our environmental advocacy work is conducted in partnership with the non-profit organization Mighty Earth (www.mightyearth.org), a fiscally-sponsored project of the Center for International Policy.

Desired Background and Responsibilities

Waxman Strategies is looking for a full-time Grants and Operations Associate to support the Environment Practice’s ongoing operations, as well as the management of our diverse portfolio of environmental clients and grants. This is an excellent opportunity to work with staff across our Environment Practice, as well as key contacts at foundations, governments, and non-profit organizations to ensure that our funding is both strategic and well-organized. As the Grants and Operations Associate, your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with senior leadership to manage and develop internal systems to ensure smooth operations across the Environment Practice;
  • Leading efforts to implement new tools and procedures to support efficient operations across the Environment Practice;
  • Ongoing tracking and analysis of Environment Practice spending;
  • Completing annual financial reports for all grants;
  • Ensuring compliance with all funder requirements, including overseeing the submission of financial and narrative reports;
  • Working with the business development team to develop budgets and proposals;
  • Supporting grant-making to international NGOs, including performing due diligence on potential grant recipients; and,
  • Other administrative support, as needed.

Who You Are

  • You have a minimum of 1-3 years of professional experience, preferably including a background in grants management and administrative work.
  • You are detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • You have at least some familiarity with fundraising, grant-making, funder compliance, and grant reporting.
  • You can take initiative and problem-solve.
  • You have a passion for environmental and social justice issues.
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Excel,  Word, and PowerPoint.
  • You can work on deadline, adapt to changing situations, and switch between different projects and tasks on short notice.
  • You have experience handling confidential information.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and are a team player.
  • You have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Details: This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. You will report to the Managing Director and work closely with our Environment Practice leaders.
