Director of Institutional Giving

Waxman Strategies, a progressive public affairs firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, uses advocacy, communications, and campaigns to shape policies, advance causes, and build movements around the world.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent written communication and project management skills, and with strong attention to detail to join our team as our first full-time Director of Institutional Giving.

In this role, you will manage all institutional giving strategy, stewardship, and reporting for the Waxman Strategies Environment Team and Mighty Earth.

Mighty Earth is a nonprofit organization incubated by Waxman Strategies which conducts much of our environmental advocacy work.  They run global campaigns to stop deforestation, transform agriculture, and shift whole industries to 100 percent clean energy.

The ideal candidate enjoys working directly with donors, as well as behind the scenes with leadership and program staff to support all fundraising activities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy & Stewardship

  • Develop and execute a strategic fundraising plan to identify and target institutional funders to raise programmatic, operating, and sponsorship support.
  • Lead all aspects of identification, cultivation, and stewardship for a growing portfolio of institutional funders and prospects.
  • Serve as the lead relationship manager for institutional funders.
  • Support Managing Director and Program Leadership with relationship management of institutional donors and prospects as needed.


  • Supervise a development associate and contractors.
  • Oversee the project management of proposal writing, reporting, sponsorship requests, grant tracking, and funder acknowledgment.
  • Write grant proposals and donor communications.

Reporting & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely institutional funding pipeline and outcome data.
  • Work with Finance staff to ensure compliance with all grant restrictions and reporting requirements and to gather information necessary for grant reports.
  • Collaborate with the Communications department in ways to highlight institutional partnerships.

Required Qualifications:

  • Superior written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to write and communicate clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques related to foundation and government fundraising.
  • Demonstrated record of success in generating significant commitments from foundations and/or government donors through grants.
  • Demonstrated project management skills; ability to work independently and successfully manage multiple projects with competing deadlines; excellent attention to detail.
  • Passion for protecting the environment and advancing a more just society.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and networking skills; ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective corporate and foundation donors.
  • Familiarity with financial information, including the ability to evaluate grant budgets. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with environmental donors.
  • Experience working with international donors.

This is a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C. office. However, during the coronavirus pandemic, our staff are working from home. The safety of our team is a top priority and we will resume working from our office, travel, and in-person meetings when it is safe to do so. You will report to the Managing Director of our Environment Practice and CEO of Mighty Earth Glenn Hurowitz.

Compensation and benefits:

The salary range for this position is $76K to $127K, depending on experience. We have a generous benefits package including group health insurance, dental benefits, unlimited vacation time, paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan.
