Director of Finance and Compliance

Waxman Strategies, a progressive public affairs firm, seeks a Director of Finance and Compliance to provide operational leadership and day-to-day management of the organization’s financial programs and activities. We’re looking for a talented leader to join our team who brings a results-oriented, hands-on and collaborative approach to managing finance systems in our growing organization.

Waxman Strategies uses advocacy, communications and campaigns to shape policies, advance causes and build movements around the world. We work on the environment, health care, and technology to secure a sustainable future, promote equity, and drive innovation. Much of our environmental advocacy work is conducted in partnership with the non-profit organization Mighty Earth, for which the Director of Finance and Compliance will also provide leadership and support.

As the, Director of Finance and Compliance, you will manage the accounting and compliance activities for the firm as well as Mighty Earth and serve as a technical expert and trusted advisor to the CEO and senior staff. You should have a strategic orientation, attention to detail, flexibility and the humor necessary to work effectively on our team and in a fast-paced environment.

Your roles & responsibilities will include:

  • Establish annual priorities and benchmarks in collaboration with the CEO and senior leadership team.
  • Update and implement business policies and accounting practices.
  • Monitor cash flow and financial projections and conduct regular reporting to keep the senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Drive accounting processes, including bookkeeping, payroll management, invoicing, and financial tracking of grant funds.
  • Collaborate with project and development staff to create grant budgets and oversee accurate grant tracking and reporting.
  • Develop, implement and manage our compliance program, including required employee training and support.
  • Ensure proper reporting and compliance with federal and state laws, including through coordination with legal counsel where necessary.
  • File quarterly and annual tax filings and related schedules, working in concert with our external CPA.
  • Coordinate and lead audit processes with external auditors.
  • Manage the Grants & Finance Associate.

Your qualifications should include:

Required: 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Management.
  • A minimum of eight years work experience in accounting or finance, ideally in both non-profit and for-profit settings.
  • An interest in working in a mission-oriented organization.
  • Experience with planning and executing, with a track record of meeting short and long-term responsibilities in a fast-paced organization.
  • Experience with Excel and QuickBooks, and an ability to quickly get up to speed with other software like Harvest (time-tracking) and Expensify (expenses).
  • Strong communication, writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience working with external auditors, compliance and regulatory oversight.
  • Experience with and comfort working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including different ethnic, racial, sexual, and religious orientations.

Preferred:

  • An MBA or CPA
  • Experience managing staff

Details: This is a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C. office. You will report to our C.E.O and work closely with our leadership team.
