Associate – Tech and Policy Communications

Waxman Strategies, a mission-driven communications and policy consulting firm, is accepting applications for an Associate to support the communications work in our Technology & Policy Communications practice. We’re looking for a talented candidate with communications experience who can support our critical work to address health equity and improve outcomes for vulnerable populations, secure a sustainable future, and foster bold innovation.

Former Congressman Henry Waxman, who was recognized as “one of the most accomplished legislators of his or any era” by President Obama, leads the firm’s work. Waxman Strategies uses advocacy, communications, and campaigns to shape policies and accelerate new technologies in the public interest. Our Technology & Policy Communications Practice serves a range of clients advancing innovative market-based solutions, including startups, investors, accelerators/incubators and associations, foundations and non-profit organizations with a focus on health and climate sectors. 

More on the position:
As our next Associate, you will conduct strategic research, write and edit analytical reports as well as communications materials, ideate on client deliverables, and build productive relationships with clients and the media.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working on communications activities for clients in the Technology & Policy Communications Practice, including both climate and health issue areas. 
  • Writing and editing a variety of communications materials, both internal and external, including press releases, reporter pitches, blog posts, fact sheets, talking points, and contributed content such as op-eds, bylines, and blog posts.
  • Supporting media relations campaigns by developing relationships with reporters and journalists in the technology, health, and climate sectors. 
  • Pitching stories, building media lists, and monitoring/reacting to industry news and trends.
  • Leading strategic research for clients, such as industry sectors, media markets and coverage.
  • Supporting client service, keeping track of deliverables, coordinating external engagement, and ensuring follow through.
  • Supporting events and promotions for clients.
  • Managing digital presence and accounts for clients, including social media and web updates.
  • Engaging in media and marketing efforts to help build the firm’s brand and reach.
  • Working with staff in each Practice to manage resources and effectively coordinate communications work to meet or exceed agreed upon metrics.

What we’re looking for in you:

Required qualifications:

  • You have at least one year of communications or PR experience, ideally including direct client service, preferably at an agency.
  • You have strong project management skills and can lead projects and initiatives from concept to execution on a deadline and budget.
  • You have strong written and oral communications skills, honed organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • You have experience driving a social media strategy around issue or campaign promotions, including creating social media content.
  • You are a proactive, self-directed problem-solver.
  • You have a commitment to working for a better and more just world.
  • You have experience with and a commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including different ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds and the LGBTQ community. 
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree. A degree in communications or journalism is preferred.

Preferred qualifications:

  • You are passionate about emerging technologies and their potential to change the world.
  • You have a background or interest in U.S. and global environmental, climate, energy, health, and social justice issues.

Details: This is a full-time position and based in the Washington, D.C. area. However, during the coronavirus pandemic, our D.C. area-based staff are working from home but have access to the office. The safety of our team is a top priority and we will resume working from our office, travel, and in-person meetings when it is safe to do so. You will report to the Managing Director of the Technology Practice. 

Compensation and benefits: The salary range for this position is $50K to $55K, depending on experience. We have a generous benefits package, including group health insurance, dental benefits, unlimited vacation time, paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan.

Interview process: Our interview process involves a phone interview, two video interviews, a candidate exercise, and reference calls for candidates advancing in our process.
