Associate – Health Practice

Waxman Strategies, a mission-driven consulting firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, is accepting applications for an Associate in our Health Practice. We’re looking for talented candidates to support our clients’ policy priorities, conduct business development research, undertake policy research projects, and provide support to the health team. As an Associate in our Health Practice, you will be a critical part of our work to develop and influence health policy on issues ranging from: lowering prescription drug prices; addressing the rising cost of health care; protecting and expanding access to care for vulnerable populations, including low income communities and communities of color; and working for strong public health and prevention policies.

Our Health Practice uses its policy knowledge and experience to provide strategic counsel, issue analysis and policy development, and engagement support to our diverse portfolio of clients. Our current health clients include: Medicines360, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, the Commonwealth Fund, West Health, National Association of Community Health Centers, 340B Health, and Arnold Ventures.

Background on the position:

As an Associate in our Health Practice, you will work with former Congressman Waxman and the rest of our health team to ensure we can shape and influence policy around one of the most pressing and high-profile issues in our country – access to affordable healthcare. The ideal candidate will combine an aptitude for research and analysis, strong communications abilities, and a determination to complete projects of the highest quality. As part of the team, you will work on a range of health policy issues.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Gathering, reviewing, analyzing, and compiling policy research to support the Health Practice and our clients;
  • Drafting policy memos, policy proposal analyses, regulatory comments, and other policy documents on behalf of Waxman Strategies and our clients;
  • Tracking regulatory and legislative activity on our policy issues, which may include federal and state-level tracking;
  • Synthesizing the latest news and providing daily clips to the Health Practice and our clients;
  • Providing administrative support to the Health Practice, including scheduling meetings, phone calls, and other administrative tasks;
  • Participating in meetings and conference calls with our clients;
  • Providing communications support to relevant health projects;
  • Conducting background research for business development;
  • Performing other duties as needed to achieve the goals of the practice and firm.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • You have at least two years of relevant and professional work experience, ideally including a background in policy and/ or legislative, political, and regulatory work.
  • You have excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills;
  • You are detail-oriented and have strong organizational skills, with an eye for accuracy;
  • You have a strong interest in health issues and an interest in deepening your expertise in health policy;
  • You have a commitment to and experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including marginalized communities such as communities of color, low-income communities, members of the LGBTQ community, various religious backgrounds, and more.
  • You have advanced Microsoft Office skills and are comfortable getting up to speed with new technologies;
  • You can multi-task effectively without sacrificing quality;
  • You can work independently and as part of a team;
  • You have the flexibility, initiative, and willingness to learn as new challenges arise.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree; a degree in public policy, public health, government, political science, or other related fields is preferred.

Details: This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. You will report to the Senior Vice President of our Health Practice and work with the rest of the health team.
