Senior Environment Director – China

Waxman Strategies, a progressive public affairs firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, is accepting applications for a Senior Environment Director. We’re looking for talented, driven candidates with expertise in China to develop and lead our strategies to ensure a positive environmental footprint for China’s growing international involvement, including the Belt and Road Initiative, forests and agriculture, and clean energy.

Who we are:

Deemed “one of the most accomplished legislators of his or any era” by President Obama, former Congressman Henry Waxman leads our all-star team, using advocacy, communications and campaigns to help shape policies, advance causes and build movements around the world. We primarily work in the areas of environment, health care and technology. Our clients include the Arcus Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Rainforest Foundation Norway, the National Association of Community Health Centers, Planned Parenthood and FoodShot. Background on the position:

Chinese companies and the Chinese government are key players on the biggest environmental issues of our time. We’re looking for a talented candidate with a strong background working in China with political experience to help make China’s vision of an ecologically harmonious civilization a reality.

China is a critical player on many of the most pressing issues on which Waxman Strategies focuses. As one of the world’s largest importers of critical commodities like soy, palm oil, rubber, and timber, China has an important role to play in ensuring that these crops are produced without driving destruction of tropical rainforests and other critical ecosystems around the world. China also has the potential to help move a significant portion of global heavy industry like steel, cement, chemicals, and paper to 100% clean energy and carbon neutrality. Additionally, China’s international investments in energy, infrastructure, and agriculture will play a decisive role in the environmental future of many countries. For these reasons, we believe there is potential for ensuring China’s international involvement results in positive outcomes for China itself and the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advising and running international advocacy campaigns that integrate engagement, communications, online, and grassroots.
  • Working closely with civil society organizations.
  • Engaging with high-level policymakers and lawmakers to support pro-environment policies.

Who you are:

  • You have a minimum of 5 years of experience, with a background in policy, advocacy, or government and expertise in China.
  • You have a strong network of contacts in China, including allies, political leaders, and journalists.
  • You are passionate about environmental issues such as climate change, protecting tropical rainforests, and clean energy.
