Environment Fellow

Who We Are:

Waxman Strategies is a progressive-minded public affairs firm led by former Congressman Henry Waxman, called “one of the most accomplished legislators of his or any era” by President Obama. Now out of Congress, Waxman heads the firm’s all-star team, which uses advocacy, communications and campaigns to help shape policies, advance causes and build movements. With a focus on delivering progressive change, fast, we are selective in our engagements, only taking on projects that interest and inspire us.

Our work is primarily in the areas of health care, the environment, and technology, media and telecommunications. A sampling of our clients include the Alaska Wilderness League, Rainforest Foundation Norway, Arcus Foundation, Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, the World Bank, and The David & Lucile Packard Foundation, among others.

The Environment Fellow will work closely with  Mighty Earth, a global non-profit environmental campaign created by Waxman. Mighty Earth’s campaigns have played a leading role in persuading the palm oil, chocolate, and soy industries to eliminate deforestation; the organization also works to make agriculture sustainable, and drive a global shift to clean energy.

What We Need:

We are looking for a college graduate who is a strong writer, deeply committed to the environment, and ready to jump into a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will combine strong communications ability, an aptitude for research and analysis, with nimbleness and an eagerness to get the job done.

As part of our fellowship program, you will learn the foundation of environmental advocacy, communications,  and campaign work, ranging from research, writing, media relations, event planning, social media, presentations skills and more. Some projects we are currently working on include: developing a strategy to end slavery in the global fishing industry; using remote sensing satellite technology to conduct rapid response monitoring of deforestation in the palm oil industry;  and conducting a communications and field campaign to protect wildlife and community land rights in the Mekong.

Responsibilities include:

Assignments vary day-to-day but essential responsibilities include (but are not limited to); conduct campaign and policy research, write and edit media and other communications materials, assist in deforestation monitoring efforts, and provide overall support (including administrative support where necessary) to senior members of the team.

This is a full-time, six-month fellowship position located in San Francisco with potential to transition into a full-time position.

Qualifications include:

  •        Bachelor’s degree or above
  •        Excellent written and oral communications skills
  •        Ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-moving, collegial environment
  •        Honed organizational skills and the ability to manage projects simultaneously

Compensation is based on experience and is highly competitive.
